Phasma – Purgatory                  8//10

Greek Duo Phasma have returned with their third full-length offering, the extreme death metal excellence that is Purgatory, an album that is as unrelenting as it is uncompromising, death metal as it should be, dangerous unhinged and extreme at its very core.

Intricate yet instantly memorable Luis Ferre’s multiple extreme vocal approach drives Phasma’s delirium, this is music that teeters on the brink of insanity, hurling the listener into darkened blackened soundscapes that drips viscera and atmosphere. Relentless with its six nameless tracks (Numbered on to six) this is best experienced as a full body of work; the rhythms are furious and technical yet some of the guitar solos are memorable for the melody and slightly dissonant atmosphere. There is a disturbing element to Phasma’s music that speaks of more than just brutal death metal, a lingering feeling that is unpleasant, something from the void that reeks of hate and violence,  aggression driven by antagonism and despair, a virulent nightmare that that renders the mind incapable of deciphering the conscious form the unconscious, From the deranged opener I to the war like vitriol of IV.

Purgatory is primal, brutal death metal infused with a blackened edge that feels like it is out of control yet held together by a cohesive sheer force of will and excellent musicianship. It is chaos that has no boundary, with its lightning-fast speed and slower atmospheric passages, this is a descent into the depravity of pure technical  death metal and darkness.

Mysthicon - Bieśń                      8 /10

After a five year wait Poland’s extreme death black metal cohorts Mysthicon return with their second full length album Bieśń (Song)

During the wait Mysthicon have refined their extreme blackened death metal to incorporate some elements of doom that result in an album that is unrelentingly heavy and powerful yet dripping in atmosphere. From the opening moments of Shapes with its deceptive intro, the result is raw blackened metal delivered with excellent tremolo picking and furious blasting. The result is raw and primal, the six piece offering an assault that is heavy yet also nuanced, the keys making a welcome addition in texture and atmosphere. New vocalist Adrian Mięsowicz commands the proceedings with authority and the toughness that only extreme Polish metal can provide combining clean vocals to the extreme lines, the addition of double bass, hurdy gurdy and acoustic guitar add texture and depth that is inspired. "Unbearable Silence" is the result, almost ethereal, that is punctuated by some excellent blasting. "Na naszej krwi" and "The Storyteller" are their opposites using multiple rhythms and dynamic guitar interplay that is just a part of the excellent musicianship on display. "Creation, “is the icy atmospheric Lux Occulta cover that makes a worthy addition to the album.

Brutally aggressive yet melodic Bieśń is a powerhouse of an album that combines speed with doom to create a modern almost progressive offering is uncompromising in its authenticity and intensity, modern black metal that is as inspired as it is unforgiving.
