Windswept - Howling in Baptismal Filth 9/10
Not so much a band but a force of nature. Howling in Baptismal Filth is the debut album from Winswept, a group of musicians from different backgrounds in extreme music that have coalesced into a coherent music force of sheer black metal terror.
Very rarely does an album catch the fury of a live show but Howling in Baptismal Filth does exactly that. It is physical, tough, and violent, soaked in sweat and fluids representing the power of the music. The acoustic introduction of ‘’To Covet God's Gale’’ is the literal calm before the storm. The four count introduction to Prayopavesa is absolute madness, this is raw primal black metal that literally threatens to explode with every time change and thunderous riff. Rachel Collins vocals are a revelation-forceful, coherent and ultra-aggressive, the perfect combination of hardcore brutality and the merciless fury of death/black metal, with screams that pierce the conscious and literally shake you from daily tedium.” Hellicite’’ has an imminently catchy middle section that prompts a pure physical reaction. ‘’Putrescere’’ is another track that you survive with another unhinged vocal performance that relishes in its inherent violence, “Cenote” is the more metallic offering yet its bridge with the tremolo riffing is nothing short of excellence. There are a genuine moments of surprise on Howling in Baptismal Filth due to it being so gloriously uncompromising and blessed with a musical excellence that provides touches of melody and groove with the chaos. It ends with the acoustic Rotten Realms Of Desolation a brief coda that indicates you have survived the experience.

Windswept have created an album that relishes hostility giving definition to the term extreme. It is a visceral experience that is so incredibly heavy that gloriously merges metal, black metal and punk hardcore into a malevolent creation that is unmissable!
