Hailing from the Altai Krai region of Barnaul is Siberia’s Theosophy. They have terrorised the underground since 2004 with their all-out assault of Black Metal. Their seventh album Line Before the Event Horizon continues the mayhem.
From the opener, ‘’Path to the Void,” and its full-on attack it is proof that Theosophy excels in crafting well-executed black metal that is raw, icy cold, tempered by manic time changes and frantic tremolo riffing, that is cold, unrepentant and unforgiving. Yet it is also diverse ‘’ Shadows On The Earth haunting clean guitar intro that sits behind the sample of astronaut Scott Carpenter, and its lead-in riff is pure in its intent, the multilayered approach never detracting. ‘’ Neptune’s Aphelion ‘’ continues the cosmic theme where space is a desolate, cold entity, its bridge is melodic and the mid-paced second half is incredibly memorable, tempered by some excellent guitar work and dynamics. ‘’Birds Under the Sky’’ is pure second wave black metal majesty, and ‘’The Glow of Uch-Sumer’’ with guest vocals from Groza’s P.G. is nothing short of mesmerizing it ode to Mount Belukha, a grandiose and diverse closer. ’’ Voice from the Black’’ is a more atmospheric piece with tremendous lead work that revels in its reflection, the interspersed melody a highlight that makes a defining statement.
Line Before The Event Horizon is an excellent black metal record that not only celebrates the genre but also recognises and embraces its diversity. Intelligent, contemplative, and yet no less furious. Theosophy has created their finest work to date and a statement on the vitality and diversity of the term extreme.
