Skjult – A Perfect Devouring Light 8/10
From 2015 Cuban Conspirator (vocals/ all instruments) has led Skjult with such an uncompromising vision that its intensity is felt throughout his interpretation of modern black metal. Its fast frenetic yet multilayered and the fifth full length release ‘A Perfect Devouring Light’ is a deconstruction of ideals where light is not the revelation but a violent penetrative force.
Musically excellent, this is a feverish rejection of the accepted. The strength of vision represented unfiltered by one individual results in an intensity that permeates every note. The title track is a tour de force of frenetic riffing and furious percussion, chaos held together by sheer force of will, represented by excess and oppression. You can hear the bass pulsate underneath an urgent heartbeat, a vital part of the desperation. The blasting of ‘Anima Oscura’’ is nothing short of superb and its mid-paced section allows the riff to breathe inviting a truly metal response. ‘Furor Lux Divina’ also carries that pure metal edge but at a cracking tempo, the black metal intrinsic to its grooves, the double kicks all part of an all-out assault that is memorable and surprising melodic.
An album that needs to celebrated for that fact that Conspirator is able to make music at all, especially of this caliber, in such a challenging location amid such turmoil. One can’t help but wonder the light mentioned is indeed a metaphor for the failed savior that has come to ‘liberate’ Cuba and is part of the all-consuming nightmare. A Perfect Devouring Light is violent, antagonistic and burns with unmissable energy that makes it a must listen. Highly recommended
