Myrkviðr – Harmur 8.5/10
Myrkviðr (Black Forest) are an Icelandic Conglomerate that explore the darkest corners of faith, violence, and the human condition. Their debut release is the raw and chaotic Harmur (Sorrow) four tracks performed in the native Icelandic that encapsulates the bans steadfast vision, that is intense and uncompromising.
Harmur is blessed with an atmosphere that is so deeply imbedded it is a natural part of their style. When it does explode it is a literal ignition of raw Icelandic black metal that gives ‘Aska” its presence and power. the striking guitar melody of ‘’ Guð Blessi Þjóðarmorð ‘is offset by the chaos of the rhythm section and vocals, its riff ever evolving infused with a classic traditional essence that makes the pure black metal rage underneath all the more effective. The guitar work and riff of the title track’’ Harmur’’ is blistering, its sonic intensity is astounding, the rhythm section adding the sense of urgency to the release of grief. The tremolo riffing is outstanding and ridiculously intense. This is music that seamlessly merges atmosphere and melody with sheer heavy prowess.

Myrkviðr are confrontational and their music reflects that. Harmur is a brief yet vital introduction to a band that explores the true horror of the real. It is steeped in the consequences of one’s actions and the abuse of power. Raw powerful and visceral this is modern black metal of the highest order. Harmur burns with an energy that needs to be heard as a matter of urgency.
