Moonspell - Far from God 8/10
Lisbon, Portugal Icons Moonspell return with their twelfth full length offering Far from God. This is Dark metal at its most pure, a gothic slow burn of an album that cements their status after a five-year break from the sounds of Hermitage in 2021.
Far from God is a lavish beautifully recorded album, that captures the essence of pure gothic rock and, tinged with a sense of 80’ sensibility , there are echoes of Sisters and Field of the Nephilim , yet this is no homage, the sparse picking and rising Synths of’’ Far from God’ ’is the perfect example with its rhythmic leads and poetry. ‘’Biblical’’ is blessed with a huge bass line and the ever present yet subtle keys that create an atmospheric lurking presence with its whispered vocals and sparse arrangement that is full of melancholy and deep anguish, yet not without a sense of hope. The deep rich vocals of Fernando Ribeiro are used to great effect on ‘’The Great Wolf in the Sky’’, its riff and darkness an album highlight that swings back and forth from harshness to a beautiful bridge section, that carries all the dynamics and excellent musicianship on display throughout the album. There is a nobility throughout “Far from God “that is authentic and has that lived in acceptance of experience without it ever becoming a cliché, full of rich textures and colours that is not

only memorable but commanding its presence that resonates with its purpose.
Far from God isn’t just an album it is a commanding declaration and a sonnet to a style that is atmospheric and deeply romantic in its own darkened way, beautiful yet scarred, melancholic, and uplifting. Moosnpell are masters of their craft and Far from God is the prefect representation.
