Grimveil – Beneath the Veil of Silent Woods 8.5/10
Beneath the Veil of Silent Woods is the debut album by Swedish /German duo Revenant (Order of Nosferat) and Simon (Tårfödd), it an atmospheric black /folk metal release that is a truly epic adventure across its eight tracks and sixty-two-minute running time.
This is a richly dark album that is as beautiful as it is bleak and confronting. The overlaying melody line of opener’ ’Where the Path Fades to Nothing’ is literally fantastic, it propels the music forward before the mid-section blast surprises and yet reminds you that it is not only atmospheric but pure black metal. ‘’ Only Trees Bear Witness” whilst mid paced enhances the progression, very rarely does harsh screaming add to the atmosphere, but Revenant captures the essence of the track excellently, and the guitar work is excellent from classically tinged acoustic to furious tremolo. The thoughtful and meditative power of ‘’Where Beauty Breathes in Silence’’ is perhaps even more aggressive yet also tinged with such an elegant melody, it creates a juxtaposition that is haunting and long lingering. Its is not just an ode to nature and the environs but is so deeply embedded it is a vital and intrinsic to the very fabric of the album. ‘’Where Beauty Breathes in Silence’ continues the experience, a rich lavish album of extremes, which defines atmosphere and essence of black metal as ‘Beneath the Veil of Silent Woods’ proves.

Beneath the Veil of Silent Woods is not just a debut but a declaration to the genre, at times it is brilliant and always excellently executed. It is a cinematic epic wonder of a record that belies its status as a debut, may this partnership prosper into even greater territories as Grimveil have presented a breathtaking record that stuns.
