Graveir -The Festering Triad                 9/10

The third full-length album by Australian black metal band Graveir is  The Festering Triad. It is not just an album but a damning account on the accepted. The Brisbane five piece have tormented the masses since 2014 and have released a vicious piece of modern confrontive black metal.

Graveir create music that is though provoking, dynamic and ever surprising, their violences is bought about by awareness and the unwillingness to conform, the result is music that is unleashed with a sense of urgency and vitriol that can only come from the terror of the real. Glooms Vocals burn with an intensity on ‘A Futile Exhortation’ and rage that ‘A Thief in the Heart of Man’ is borne from experience.  It is a sonic assault that benefits greatly from a recording that captures the energy and exemplary musicianship throughout without sacrificing the raw extreme power of the music and the message. The blast beats and rhythms rage against some excellent riffing and the result is unrelenting. The melody as deranged as the heaviness, and there is a lot of it. ’’The Rite of Degradation’’ and ‘’Revanchism” are more examples of uncompromising honesty at a time when it offends when it should educate

Intelligent, thought provoking and utterly unrepentant, the Festering Triad is an album that consumes you and exposes the decay that lingers within society and the soul. Intense, excellently executed black metal that frightens and illuminates the individual into action, majestic yet cruel, it is an album that demands your full attention. Superb

Asenheim – Elbenblut                             8/10

Released to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The tenth full-length offering from German Pagan/Black Metal purveyors Asenheim, Elbenblut is an album that celebrates and explores the works of Tolkien. It is an atmospheric, cinematic and a grand all immersive work of extreme art.

Asenheim have mastered the art of the concept album by creating a clear cohesive work of art with a definitive narrative pattern. Grand and sweeping the majestic traditional elements soar against the bleakness of the modern, it is an album that does not require speed to deliver its message, yet it is no less intense, the instrumentation is excellent and the dynamic multilayering of melodies create an intimacy as you journey through the music within. So Bold and daring in scope  the duo of Tiwaz and Valfor combine to make tracks ‘’Ein steiniger Weg’’, ‘’Wo die Schatten drohen’’ and ‘’Das letzte Zeitalter’’ are engaging atmospheric  at times brooding and disturbing pieces  that are memorable moments of modern and traditional that never compromises  the arch of the album for its direction. Tolkien is a rich source of inspiration and Asenheim plunder it with ease.

Dense, atmospheric and forbidding Elbenblut is an album that master’s subtlety and extremity in equal measure at times both beautiful and haunting. Asenheim have created an ambitious rewarding piece of extreme art within an established universe and made it their own.
