For their fifth album the collective of Fyrnask from Lübeck, Eitorf (Germany) have embraced the rage and the terror of inevitability that is the conceptual “’Iosir”. Described as a ‘’album that follows a single consciousness through the realm of the dead — across burning gates, wrathful and luminous forces, and a final dissolution.”  It is an all-encompassing plunge into the depths of the utterly uncompromising black metal.

Fyrnask has created an alum that reeks of intensity and atmosphere. From the superb yet chaotic riffing to the lurking keyboard presence, this is a journey that is relentless yet also multifaceted in its delivery. The narration of Fyrnd and the vocal delivery is that of howling madness and the sorrow of despair, unforgiving and resolute. “’Loginn Ómyndaði” (The Flame Unformed) and” Krýndur af tóminu “(Crowned by the void) are mere examples of the exemplary musicianship that accompanies the harrowing void, it is deconstruction of knowledge and expectation, that is unafraid to experiment whilst remaining true to the musical conventions that spawned it. Vast and epic, this is an album that metamorphizes throughout its run time yet never loses its malevolent darkness or its sheer heavy authority. The rhythm section is utterly bombastic hurtling the listener into an unwelcome oblivion Glóð svíður (Embers Burn) and Dødens Segl (the seal of death) are majestic wonders with Choral annotations that drag you into its fiery embrace.

Íosir is by no means easy, it is a demanding challenging release that frays the nerves and scars the senses. it’s a traumatic journey through the underworld of the dead that leaves an indelible lasting impression and yet is a fascinating extreme /black display of prowess.  Fyrnask has created a triumphant journey that is simply essential uneasy listening.
