Finsterforst- Still 9/10
For those uninitiated, the sixth full length album by Germanys Finsterforst is a celebration of their black forest metal and the crossing of genre boundaries. Dynamic and steeped in tradition, the result is an album that celebrates life and exemplary musicianship.
From some simply beautifully clean guitar sections to the simply huge riff that is ‘Obduktion’’, the pacing is tempered and sparse to allow everything to fully overwhelm the senses with a sense of class and maturity. The vocal orchestrations are soul stirring and the music rousing a building crescendo of tension and authority. ‘’Leere’’ is simply epic with its layered clean vocals that echoes the great old ones with a modern stylistic edge. The production is excellent, being able to capture the clean picking and vocals of Johannes Joseph and Oliver Berlin that range throughout its lengthy twenty-four minutes. The thunder and power of the rhythm section add to gravitas and those riffs every single one of them fantastic. Just to prove their versatility Pink Floyds “Another brick in the wall gets the Finsterforst treatment whilst Immortal's "Beyond the North Waves" is given a superb interpretation.
Still is simply a huge album with a 78-minute runtime that requires many listens to
appreciate the textures and the hidden melodies within, it is a towering achievement that merges the traditional/folk with a modern edge that is vital and compelling. Grandiose and reverent in equal measure, Finsterforst have created a metal marvel in ode to the earth and the gods that is stunning.
