There are those who claim to be blasphemous and there are those who embody it. Australia’s Faustian is one such act, a supergroup if you will (featuring members of Werewolves) that represent the utter nihilism within. Their second release is the utterly defiant Parable Of The Sewer

A sacrilegious interpretation of the parable of the Sower (the trade of the soul for knowledge or power) the exchange in this instance is the convergence of their black metal into a relentless beast of an album that is uncompromising and unforgiving. It is a chaotic display of musical prowess that is multifaceted. There is a high groove that completes the madness of ‘Immaculate’, and ‘’Cephalophore’’ has some choral-induced chants before its pure metal delves into the depths of insanity before its return. It is an ode of unrepentant nineties black metal infused with unhealthy doses of death/thrash. The rhythm section is superb as is Sam Bean’s vocals, from wild growls to intelligible malignancy, he is the curator of the madness. ‘’We Do Not Use Names Here’ is as memorable as it is unhinged, the rapid 2/4 a rapid-fire shotgun of intent and purpose offset by razor sharp riffing that is precise and memorable.

Steadfast and Irreverent Parable of The Sewer is the utterly vital and violent record that represents the strengths of extreme black metal and none of its weaknesses. The result is an album that embraces and reflects horrors within, it incites a reaction with a tempting hand to lead you into darkness. Faustian has created an album of such brute force that it celebrates the wicked with unbridled intensity. Highly recommended.
