Exitium Sui- Unravelling 9/10
Â
The third full length release from Exitium Sui is Unravelling, an album that explores the disturbing reflection of experience. Its sole creator E.S. has delivered a masterclass of atmospheric doom-laden black metal.
At times Unravelling feels like a nightmare of epic proportions, its tormented howls punctuated by frantic screams that is a cathartic release of anxieties and nightmares. Its atmosphere is dense and cloying, at times inescapable, at others punctuated with brief slivers of light. ‘’Crippled by the God-Hand’’ is an exorable descent that fully explores the harrowing experience of the acts of others and choice. It is a seamless orchestration of black metal and slower paced despair. The haunting dissonant riff of ‘’Septikinesis’’ is blessed with a melancholic melody before it becomes a relentless display of speed and intensity. The piano interlude of “Only Death Remembers “, is striking before its calamitous’ crescendo,’’ Drowning Viracocha’’ carries a beautiful riff that creates a sense of optimism, with its minimal keyboards against a fracturing vocal performance. ‘’Until the End Hath Found Us’’ is the prefect coda representative of that which came before and of what is to become, a harmonious lead against the knowledge of inevitability. It shatters all expectations of funeral doom and black metal to create a darkened ambience that is born solely of the individual.

Unravelling is an album where every riff and musical line carries its own weight and depth, a deeper meaning to a visceral experience that embraces its own personal darkness but is accepting of light and hope. It is a harrowing album of such depth and heaviness that it transcends the gernes that spawned it. Authentic and implacable Exitium Sui have created an experience that defies all expectations that is both tumultuous and rewarding. Excellent
