Elfor / Hyver / Erroiak – Roi des Forêts - Basoen Jauna 7.7/10
There are split release and then there are split releases. ‘’Roi des Forêts - Basoen Jauna’’ is a combined effort from single band artists Elffor (Spain), Hyver (France), and Erroiak (France). It is the exploration of a universal theme surrounding the myth, folklore, and cult of the bear in the Pyrenean interpretated through dungeon synth and black metal.
A split that explores the entire extreme musical spectrum Elffor and its sole creator Eöl unleash a 20-minute track that explores the subject matter with a sense of grandeur and symphonic. Epic in scope and execution over its lengthy runtime, the riff at the 6 minute is a melodic tremolo driven wonder, the result is a cinematic world building composition with a definitive beginning middle and end that is representative of his blackened dungeon inspired style. Hyver continues the journey of the bear and its environment with a sound that is extreme and almost medieval in its feeling, it’s a slower more stripped sound of black metal that is accompanied by a sense of the classical and symphonic. L e Trône des Bois is a dreamscape of peace and wonder, a gentle hibernation if you will. Erroiak (crows) and his interpretative dungeon synth /black metal contributes the final three tracks, a journey steeped in mysticism and a deeply rooted reverie that has a connection to the natural and the bears environment, both lush and sparse in equal measure, the synths are a narrative driving force propelling the listener through calm and chaos in equal measure and possibly the final hunt.
Roi des Forêts - Basoen Jauna (Lord of the Forests) is a deep dive into the mythology and the various approaches to the subject matter form the Basque Land. It is a split that once again proves the Diversity that is prevalent within extreme metal and its various interpretations, it is an immersive cinematic experience representative of the genre, rousing and melancholic it is an outstanding introduction to three solo artists and their creative extravagant art.
