Argul - Soledad and Orgullo 8.5/10
Formed in Peru in 2014 by guitarist Mauricio Guerrero and drummer Jose María Venturi, the road to their debut album has been a long one. Soledad and Orgullo is that debut and it is a celebration of the undeniable power of traditional doom merged with flourishes of psychedelia and stoner.
From the opening note with its dual guitar passages Soledad and Orgullo is an ode to Traditional doom, the style purely emotional without any of the modern accouterments. The Riff of Animal Dog is the perfect example, a huge crushing slab of monolithic metal that is evocative and inescapable, its midsection pure traditional stomping glory, before it delves back into its glorious sheer heaviness. The soaring Spanish language clean vocals are a welcome addition that keeps the listener guessing with their melody and harmony. This is a guitarist’s dream, the solo that hides within Kamog is beautiful, you could listen to it all day long, but then you would miss the mighty riff that follows it. Argul are unafraid to explore lengthy soundscapes that have clear purpose and intent, the fourteen-minute tracks disappear as you become immersed in the music and experience+.
This is one of the slower, introspective gloriously heavy releases in modern times for a debut album it is a masterclass in subtlety and sheer power. Defying modern tropes whilst being distinct and original in its own unique way, it gives definition to the term epic and is a celebration of old school glory and modern sensibilities. Soledad and Orgullo is an unmissable experience.
